Celebrating 90 years of medical health services, the team work with elite football clubs and receiving athletes from all over the world.
The clinic has more than 40 medical specialties, including sports medicine, orthopaedics, cardiology, exercise physiology, internal medicine, exercise prescription, sports psychology, rehabilitation and rheumatology. The clinic has the latest diagnosis technology ( Inc. MRI & CT scan) and fully equipped physiotherapy (4 swimming pools) facilities.
We are FC Porto’s clinic of reference, certificated by the European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy (ESSKA) and by the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS) and was the first FMCE in Iberian Peninsula.
We invented the Porto Knee Testing device (BES Innovation Prize), a unique technology that measures anteroposterior and rotatory knee laxity inside MRI.
Our know-how in sports medicine evolved over generations. The first member of the Espregueira Mendes family specialized in orthopaedics was João de Espregueira Mendes, in 1926. His son, J.M. Espregueira Mendes MD, was the orthopaedic surgeon at FC Porto between 1978 and 1989. Currently, Professor João Espregueira-Mendes is the chairman of the clinic, the president of ESSKA Foundation, ISAKOS Treasurer, Chairman of the Publication Committee and Patellofemoral Foundation board member.

The sensitivity and specificity of the device help measuring laxity within MRI and CT-scan makes PKTD® an excellent new tool for diagnosis, therapeutic applications and follow-up. Safe and compatible use with MRI or CT-Scan brings several advantages to imaging departments, physicians and patients:
• It allows objective evaluation of anterior, posterior and combined rotation laxity of the knee.
• It can be useful in the identification of patients with ACL, PCL and posterolateral corner (PLC) rupture that require surgery or conservative treatment.
• It might play a role in surgical indication identifying partial ruptures due to its unique feature of combining anatomical and dynamic evaluation amplified through the “eyes” of MRI or CT-Scan.
• It can contribute to the decision of doing a partial repair and on the surgical technique choice (single or double bundle).
• PKTD can also be useful in the evaluation of knee stability after ligament reconstruction (results, return to sports activities and risk of osteoarthritis).
